| Sudanese Arabic language is the everyday speech of millions of people in Sudan, southern Egypt (or Nubia), in Eritrea, the Ethiopian borderlands, and is a market language throughout Chad and as far as Kano and Maiduguri, Nigeria, and is the daily language in Chad’s eastern prefectures. This language is eminently useful throughout the region described above, and is certainly associated with political, social, and cultural power in Sudan. But there is a certain enigmatic quality to the language’s perception by its native speakers. Throughout the Muslim world, even in its many regions where Arabic is not a native language, there is enormous prestige associated with Modern Standard, or “Classical” Arabic, the language of the Qur’an and Islam’s most important documents. |
