The African Studies Program admits students only in the fall quarter. The final application deadline is 1 January. Criteria for admission include: a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, a good grade point average in the student's undergraduate major, a statement of purpose, an autobiographical sketch, and three letters of recommendation which evaluate the applicant's motivation, intellectual maturity, school, work, and travel experience. Maintaining a diverse student body is an important goal of the program and applications are encouraged from Africa.
